A caption review checklist for creator video
Separate transcript correction, subtitle format checks and final playback review before releasing a captioned clip.

Download a worked claim-review example — fictional brief, flawed draft, evidence decisions and corrected copy.
Define what you are delivering
Write down whether you need a subtitle sidecar, captions visible in the video, or both. Ask the destination owner which formats the player accepts. Descript’s export documentation distinguishes subtitle files from captions rendered into video.
Keep the unedited source recording and a revision number. A reviewer should be able to compare the delivered clip with the original without guessing which file is current.
Check the words against the recording
Listen specifically for names, numbers, negation and speaker changes. An omitted “not” can reverse a statement; a misspelled product name can make a useful tutorial impossible to follow.
Use transcript correction for spelling rather than assuming you need to change the recorded words. Descript documents that correction can leave the underlying audio unchanged. Open its current guide for the exact controls.
Review timing and meaning
Inspect the beginning and end of each spoken passage in the exported artifact. Check that captions remain long enough to read and do not cover information the viewer needs. Do not treat a successful file export as a playback test.
Fictional review sample: “Do not publish before May 12.” A passing result preserves the negation and date, and appears with the matching speech. Mark each failure with a timestamp and a correction owner.
Hand off a complete package
Deliver the video, required subtitle file, source revision and a short list of unresolved issues. Request one sound-off review for caption coverage and one sound-on review for meaning.
For your next trial, log errors by category rather than inventing one overall accuracy score. Repeating the same check on several representative recordings is more informative than calling one clean sample a comprehensive test.
